Im trying to get my holley to Idle decently and am having a hard time. Ive tried getting the maximum maifold vacumme with the leanest setting still the car doesnt Idle smooth. Ive also tried doing the 3/4 turn out from where the car would stumble from the air/fuel mixture. I can turn both Air/Fuel screws all the way in and it doesnt die. does that mean I need to make another adjustmen. im pretty clueless when it comes to carbs. does a 454(stock long block, with all the usual bolt ons) have a rougher than
usual Idle?

justin,
with the carb off, turn it up side down, look at the secondary side throttle plates, you should see the very end off the small(very small)fuel transfer slots, with the plates closed, if not, there is a small adjustment screw on the bottem of the base plate to adjust this.adjust this so the slots show about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch. this will make the air/fuel adjustments more affective.to adjust the floats, with the car runnin remove the sight plug from the float bowl, then adjust the ajusting screw and nut on top of the float bowl so fuel just trickles out the sight plug, on this adjustment the nut adjusts the float, the screw locks the setting. when finished put the sight plug back in. well I know this is not worded that great but I hope this helps! 67rat member #199

They could be right or not. The only way to know is the check it. It's really very easy. Just follow 67RAT's instructions. Also, you might want to pick up a book on Holleys. I have the Hayes book, it's not great but does walk you through some of the tuning procedures.
If you want to have it tuned professionally, there is a fellow in Upland CA who is among the very best with Holleys. He does carbs and ignitions for lots of racers. You can call Dave Lang Sr., at Fuel Curve West (909) 981-0704. Tell him I sent you.
