: Elcamino sound deadening
flywheel May 9th, 00, 5:48 PM My 72 Elky has nothing covering the rear wall of the cab.( between the cab and bed).
I would like to cover it with some kind of sound deadening stuff to keep out some of the exhuast noise.???
Has anybody done this?
Built in any speakers?
What did you use?
Iv got the interior out, so now is the time to do it! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

What i did with my 70 elky was upholstered it. I used some 3M spray glue to attach some cotton batting to the wall for insulation and cushion, then glued some vinyl right over the top of it.
Looks pretty good and it helps cut down some of the noise
DaDon May 10th, 00, 11:46 AM If you say there's nothing there, I asume you're missing the panel that should be there. You can probably find them but when I had my 72, I used a fiberboard and made one to fit. Then, like Zak, covered it with material. Use some sound deadener material of your choice and you should be okay. I mounted some speakers in mine too...worked well. Good Luck!

I don't remember what the first thing is!?

Cardiac May 10th, 00, 5:27 PM I use a product called "Bituthene" aka; "bitch-a-thane" http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
It's a rubberized alsphalt & urathane with a very sticky back. It's about 1/8" thick. I found it to have better sound resistance than even DynoMat.
It's primary use is around heat ducts in large buildings. (and insulating hot rods)

Are you sure that the panel was original? Just asking cause I've never seen an early elky with the back wall covered (not that I've seen many).

DaDon May 11th, 00, 2:19 PM Rick, Maybe it wasn't original, but it was there when I got the truck. Fit right up into a channel at the top and had a small screw holding the bottom on each side. It seemed like an original material but was kind of warped from an earlier water leak in the rear glass, so I made a new one using it as a template. Worked for me. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanx for the info. My elky (custom) was a second owner & didn't have anything back there, but it looks like it should. I've been planning to do something along those lines.
Rick
A 71 grill was installed when I bought the elky. Apparently it was in an accident & the fenders, hood & grill came from a 71. I did not know the difference when I bought it; it was a clean rust free 55,000 mile car that I HAD to have. Anyway when it came time to replace the cracked grill I decided that I liked the looks of a 71 better. By that time I knew the difference.
The rhino coat is fine. I don't carry much of anything back there, and now have a bed cover. It does cut down on noise!
With 3.31 gears & 235/70 tires 70MPH is right at 2100 rpm.
