The chrome on my '68 SS' dash knobs was apparently looking ratty, so the previous owner just painted them silver. This looks even more ratty.
I understand that knobs use "hard chrome", vs the chrome they put on dash bezels. The hard stuff is supposedly not repairable. At least that's what one shop told me.
Anyone know of a place that can hard chrome my knobs and the little ring bezels around them?
Thanks.

No but why not visit your local bone yard.

COPO,
Hey, I would love to visit the local bone yard and pick some up. However, there isn't a '68 Chevelle in a junk yard in the whole state of Utah. I know of one '69, but it is gutted.

I think I can help you guys. Plastic knobs were "chromed" by a process called vaccum metalizing. Is this what you are talking about? If so, there are at least two guys that advertise in Hemmings. I think they are in the services offered section. I used one of them to do my dash bezels. Some of my knobs appear to be done the same way.
If they are solid metal, then a good plater should be able to re-chrome them. My 67 has both kinds. The wiper knob is metal and the rest are plastic.
Be sure to wash and clean your knobs really well before you send it off. Talk to the guy and find out exactly what he is going to do before you send it in to be metalized. Metalizing will not hide scratches. I did not prep my stuff very well before I sent it in. They just chromed right over the the cracks and dirt!
I will try and look these guys up and post their info.

I had the same problem with my 68 SS. I found a place in Texas (don't have the info anymore) that could refurb them, but it was so expensive I decided not to do it. It does take a special process to get it to stick to plastic, none of the knobs are metal. My car isn't original so it wasn't such a tough decision. I tried the silver paint, but it looked bad. I have since painted all knobs and bezels black and they actually look pretty good. Just a suggestion (a lot cheaper).
