I am disassembling the hood hinges on my 69 Chevelle. Does anyone know where I can get replacement rivets that were used to hold all the hinge parts together? I also need the tool that sets the rivets in place. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You probably can't buy them but anyone with a lathe could make them easily enough.

I took a used one to a machine shop and had them made. To install them, I took a cold chisel and did the X pattern(do a "|" then a "-"). That started the mushrooming of the end. I then finished it off with a regular hammer. They seem to be working OK, although you have to make sure your holes haven't elongated.

I needed hinges for my 69 a year ago and played around for a month trying to find them. In my opinion, rebuilding them is not the best option. If they are worn enough to need new pins, the holes are equally worn. Plus, I didn’t want to lay out cash for new pins and have them look “rebuilt”.

I bought a new set of 70 hinges at the dealer for a cheap price (I don’t remember the $ but it was cheaper than rebuilding). I cut off the safety tabs on the back edges (I believe these were added in 70 to keep hood from decapitating passengers in wreck) and they are EXACT duplicates to my old 69 hinges. Modifying them took 1/2 hour. (Cut off the tab with a hacksaw and radius the corner with a file to match you 69 hinges).

My car is not a 1,000 pt trailer queen, but I’m real picky.

Good luck!
