HAVE A 67 MALIBU. WOULD LIKE TO SWAP 10 BOLT FOR 12 BOLT. NEED TO KNOW YEARS, MAKES AND MODELS FOR DIRECT REPLACEMENTS. WOULD LIKE TO SWAP WITHOUT MODIFICATIONS IF POSSIBLE. ALSO IS THERE ANY MARKS ON THE HOUSING TO IDENTIFY WHAT IT CAME OUT OF?

Find a 12 bolt out of a 64-67 and it should bolt right in. I have heard that 68-72 are a little wider and would stick out a bit. I could be wrong though.

I just completed this swap, I bought a 12 bolt at a flea market and the guy said it was just rebuilt....it was a piece of junk for $625. To do it again I would find non-posi rear with the gears I wanted and but a posi unit / new axles and bearings. It would be cheaper and you would know what you have. A rear from a 68 - 72 will bolt right in.

The '64 to '67 housings are, if memory serves, 1 1/2" narrower than the '68 to '72's. However, the later housings are a direct bolt in if you can live with the loss of outeside wheel clearance. One alternative is to go with an offset wheel. The early 12 bolt versions are next to impossible to locate and the later ones are getting scarce themselves. Another option to consider, if you're looking at strength more than originality, is a ford ( yuk ) 9-inch. There are several companies which offer a bolt in conversion and as bad as I hate to say it, they are a lot stronger than the 12 bolt, not to mention they have bolt in axles verses the chevy's c-clips which decreses the risk of losing a wheel in the event of a broken axle. Good luck, Victor
