I am in the procees of changing my 69 ss from a bench with 4 speed to buckets with a console. The original shifter hump appears to have approx 25 spot welds holding it on. Anyone have any ideas to remove the hump short of grinding every weld off? Might seem like a dumb question but it never hurts to ask.
Thanks Brad

There is no easy way that I know of. A grinder, air chisel, and lots of swearing will get it done...

Actually it's much easier than that. Just purchase a "spot weld cutter". It's like a miniature hole saw. It has a 1/8 inch pilot bit with usually your choice of either a 3/8 or 1/2 inch outer hole cutter. They can be purchased from the Eastwood Co. or you should be able to find them at a bodyshop supply.

You find the overlapping panels in this case the hump is overlapping the floorboard. Line up the pilot bit in the center of the spot weld and drill thru. As the hole cutter portion of the bit nears the top layer of sheet metal cut flat thru the top layer of sheetmetal only. Do this on all spot welds. Some edges may still be slightly attached but simply take a screwdrivew or very small pry bar and pop the panel loose around the edges. This leaves the floorboard sheetmetal you need to use over again in great shape. Place the new hump in position over the floorboard mark the bottom of the new hump thru each 1/8 inch pilot hole thru the floorboard. Now drill out a 1/4 inch hole at each mark in the new hump. Now when you place the new hump over the floorboard you will have a 1/4 inch hole over each 1/8 inch pilot hole just perfect for welding. Be sure to dress up each 1/8 inch hole for good clean bare metal before welding.
