I have just completed recovering the bucket seats for my 69 and now have pulled the bottom off the headrests. It looks like the old is molded on. Do the new covers go over the old or do I need to remove the old covering. It looks like my foam will come apart if I try to remove the old covering. How do I attach the new covers?

The old headrest is a one piece vacuum formed piece of foam. There's no separate covering. Your new cover goes over it. How it's attached I have no idea...probably hog hooks that go under the bottom plastic cover. Incidentally, I believe some company is selling complete new headrests, manufactured as the originals were. Probably pricey, though.

I am in the middle of preparing my buckets for apholstery myself. I took a utility knife and cut the hard plastic into strips, and then used a putty knife to "scrape" the glue and vinyl off the headrest foam. Turned out pretty good and I dont have any holes dug into the foam. I stripped mine down because I am using velour when my seats are recovered and I did not want the headrests to be hard from the vinyl if it had been left underneath.

"Origional Parts Group" has new headrests at $159/pair. Black only, must be vinyl dyed if you want another color. Cheaper than a professional re-cover job which I learned is about $250-350. I bought a pair, they look great. Steve

300 bucks to put a cover on a pair of headrests?? Seems a bit unrealistic to me. I had 2 complete seats done for $150.
