In rebuilding my vent windows, must I remove the lower steel channel insert where the window rides and cut the new channel rubber and felt or leave the channel insert intact and cut the new rubber and felt? Anyone?

The bottom vent window rubber is one piece with the vertical (sloped) window rubber. TO replace, this is one piece. You must remove the vent window from the door and striaghten the tabs that hold the weatherstrip in place.

in my experience, the repro stuff isnt very good. if you can live without it, do so.

My discription was not very good, it is not the vent window rubber persay, but the the door window channel that goes from the top of the vent window to inside the lower part of the door.

Here's a link that will show you what you need to do.

You may be able to replace that window felt without removing everything, but I found it easier to do with everything out.

Email me from the link here at TC if you like. I haven't updated all the pages on my site yet.

I must apologize for the main page on my site. I tried to update it quickly, but I ended up messing up all the image links.

jlandry, thanks for the link. It is the door window felt strip runner that I am asking about. Where the door window travels. The track inside the door has an extention rivited to it and the replacement runner will not fit with it on making the glass to tight. Should I remove the runner track or shorten the rubber/felt to fit?

I rebuilt the vent windows in my 68 cause I wanted to have them re-chromed, and install new date coded glass. When I put the assemblies back together with the new weather striping, I cut the piece your talking about and left the old channel in the lower section where the front of the glass slides into the door and out of sight. It had very little wear so I had no reason to replace it. The door glass slides up and down freely on both the driver and pass side...

Thank you 71SSBB, I did not want to cut that expensive felt, but there is no other way as it will not fit into the channel. My lower channel felt is worn but must use what I have. Thanks again.

Try putting moleskin in the lower channel. You can purchase it from any drug store. Worked very well on my '56.

I believe I know exactly what your asking and
I drilled out the pop rivets and left the channel out. Everything fit fine after that.
