The ash tray in my 70 SS dash has nothing to keep it closed. I did a search on this site and found a posting that says there is supposed to be a spring that would keep it closed or open depending on which you position is wanted. Does anybody know if there is a place to get the spring? I have searched all of the parts suppliers that I know of and haven't found any.

I've never found that spring anywhere. It is a torsion spring which is fairly common but I haven't found one that is exactly right. I ended up replacing the ashtray with one that has a friction clip rather than the spring. There were two styles of ashtrays used and this one doesn't use the spring. They also make repop ashtrays which you can get from the Chevelle resto suppliers like Ground Up.

Professional restorer I talked to said those springs aren't available anywhere. Replace with a 71 or 72, no spring.
