Are you looking for the metal grills or the cardboard covers for in the trunk???

I know I have seen the cardboard covers in catalogs. Call our sponsor, Ground Up.

If they don't have them try the others.

if you are using the original style of speakers and mounting, there should be no covers or metal grilles. The rear shelf has perforations for the sound to get through.

JWagner,

What do you base your comment of no covers on? Is it a factory based assembly document? Or is it from the catalogs of what is availible? I'm not trying to be a hard-ass, I really want to know your source of info.

My reason for asking it this: My 70 SS396 has the rear speaker option on the build sheet for an AM/FM push button radio. I have two speakers in back because I also have the rear window defogger, which takes up the center position.

I do not know if they are correct, but I found orginal GM rear speaker grilles out of a 70 Chevelle (don't know if Malibu or SS). They are black rectangular grilles that perfectly match the holes in the metal of my rear shelf. I got them from a guy, Gary here in the classifieds, who has been selling parts for a while. He is a very good guy and is very up front about his parts/condition/usage.

Part of my thought on this is that from memory, these cars had perforations in the instrument panel (no grilles) and a similar treatment in the rear. Also, I have replaced my rear package shelf and had to specify if I wanted one for rear speakers or not. I got the one for the rear speakers and it has no holes for mounting the speakers or any grillwork. The shelf has a coarse cloth and a lot of holes in the board material for the sound to come through. I looked through some of the GM assembly, body and chassis manuals, and cannot find any reference or sketch of rear seat speakers in Chevelles. oddly enough they do show the two types of rear defoggers and how they go in. The Fisher body manual shows the wiring, but no installation details for the rear speakers. They do have a bit of info on the hardware for front speakers, though. The real deciding factor here would be if someone has a service parts book that lists the grilles. That would be very convincing.

The reason why the holes match up is that all 6X9 speakers have the same hole configs. To keep the original style, you would need to slide some screws in from underneath. All he did is drill four holes and get some grilles from Trak auto or any auto store near the audio department.

I have parted out many chevelles, unfortunately no 70's had the factory radio but I had many 71-72s with factory rear speakers, and they all had metal speaker covers on the rear package tray, and cardboard covers which mounted to the speaker magnets. So I would guess that speaker covers were supposed to be there.

My 70 had an AM radio with a fade control, 2 front speakers and 1 rear speaker with a color matched metal grill in the rear. The mount studs are part of the grill and stick down in the trunk where the speaker was mounted by using nuts with built in star washers. I still have everything except the speakers if anyone needs them.

Here is the GM part number for the rear speaker grilles,7938725 I'm sure they are discontinued but its worth a try. the book says it fits 71-72 so i'm assuming that 70 had the mesh type rear shelf. I have both a 72 Chevelle and a 72 monte carlo both with factory installed stereos and rear defog. the speaker grilles are the color of the rear shelf. My Monte has been in the family since new and it's all original.

viza, I have one. I sold the car before I got the second one. If I find another I'll let you know.

Whoa, I think you guys have made this harder than you have to.

In 1970, whether you had a single speaker in the rear or both speakers used, you got rear speaker grill covers that were paint-matched to the interior of the car.

Now I've heard of the "mesh" style rear shelf, and yes it makes sense that this was an option that allowed for "invisible" speaker holes. Personally I've NEVER seen this on any 70-72 chevelles with or without rear speakers.

I'm not quite sure how speaker(s) could be held in place with the rear "mesh" package tray.--The grills had studs that not only held them to the sheet metal, but provided a support for the speakers themselves.

As for the original question...

Everywhere (catalogs) I've seen just lists '71-72 speaker grills.
Not sure on what they consider the difference. You might want to try Team Chevelle's Wanted ads.

Hope this helps.

I looked at the Grille for 71-72 in the Year One catalog. They are GM, not repro. They are different from the ones I have in that they have are not rectangular. The edges bulge outward in nice gentle curves. Pretty, but not correct for 70.
