Hi,
I just received a new console for my '72 convertible. I placed it in the car and noticed it
has a gap between the bottom on the console and the floor ( rug ). Is this normal?
I would think it should fit flush to the floor shouldn't it?
The front mounts and the rear mounts fit flush but the area where the plastic is
'rounded' sits above the rug almost 3/4 of an inch ???
Any guidance on this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Glenn

Glenn,

Think non-console cars had a different "hump" around the shifter area than the console cars-at least there were 2 selections when I ordered a piece from G/U.

Glenn...It's like Sid said, you can't put a console in a non-console car without replacing the hump. Does the car have a console in it that you want to replace ,or was it a non-console car?

Not trying to start a riot or anything, but my buddy put a console in his 71, and it was a column car. Bought all the stuff from a junkyard, this was in 1989 by the way. So, unless he did something that I didn't know about, he made it work.

There is no difference between a automatic car, both humps are the same. The manual trans has two different humps for console or non cosole cars.

can you shave the bottom of the console without hurting any of its appearance? So it fits nice and flush... maybe shave down the high points..... ? I always thought the "humps" were different.

Hello Glenn,

Just thinking a cheap or temporary solution might be to use a peice of foam under the rug to lift it a bit. I would imagine 1 inch foam would compress just about right when you place the console down.

I built an cold air box with foam from McMaster Carr. Great place for "fabricator stuff".

Good luck, Joe

All the mount points appear to sit flush with the rug. It sticks up just about where the
hump really starts to drop down so I can not really shave anything off without
destroying the mounting. I am starting to think of maybe just using the idea of the foam rubber or someting similar under the run. I pretty much thought these consoles came from the same supplier and were made from the same mold, guess I was way wrong.
Anyway, thanks to all of you who responded.
BTW, it is an original column shift car, if that makes any difference. As soon as I get the shfter and mounting plate I will get serious about mounting everything.
Thanks again,
Glenn
