: El Camino smuggler's box

Replacing the smugglers box on my 70 El Camino. Old one was screwed in (about 10 screws/bolts around front lip which seemed to have caused all the cracking) with some kind of caulking (~1" wide) between the lip and the body. The new box has no predrilled screw holes and fits pretty tight w/o screws. Question is were the screws/bolts original from factory and what is the caulking and where can I get it? Is the caulking original factory? I can't seem to find this box in the factory assembly manual. If anyone knows the page number, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Yes, the screws are supposed to be there. I used strip caulking from a hardware store for sealing mine in.

Yes it had screws from the factory.
I don't know if sealer was factory or not.
I did not seal mine at all which allows the bed to drain.
I just primed and painted the entire inside and left the plugs out of the bottom.

Hmmmmm.... Are you asking about the plastic compartment behind the driver's seat or the smuggler's box cover in the bed area? Take your pick of the above answers depending on your question. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Edit: Oops....it's in the Interiors Forum, so I'll bet it's the plastic compartment!

Thanks for the info. I will get some new screws, washers and the sealer, probably at Home Depot.

Yep, I was refering to the interior storage compartment. One thing that may help that I thought about in hindsight is to make a metal flange to fit the outside surface of the box. That way the screws wouldn't try to cut into the plastic box. The plastic gets brittle with age and a metal flange would reduce the stress on the area around the screws. Just an afterthought.
