: Ignition DEAD after car stalls?

This weekend, I cleaned my garage so I had to pull the car out('72 Chevelle 350 4 bar all orig). The car is really never driven.

Anyway, It starts up as usual and I didn't let it warm up as usual so it stalls. When I go to crank the ignition, IT IS DEAD. However, the dash idiot lights do come on. So I think maybe it's getting a false signal from the console floor shifter. I try it in neutral and still dead.

After I let it sit, it cranks right over. the battery is only (3) years old and not really driven much.

Any ideas? I can't have this happening when I do finally use the car more often.

Thanks
Brian

Sounds like your starter selinoid is not working properly. Try banging on your starter or pulling it out and having it tested. I have had that problem before. Sometimes the selinoid gets too hot and will not activate the starter

Brian,

Check the wires that go to your starter. One of mine came loose and caused the same problem. I could wiggle them from the firewall and get it to start. With my headers, it took a long extension, a wobble and a 5/16 socket. Good luck. Jeff

Oh yea... If you can. Go drive that car! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

OK, Here's my wild XXX guess.
Based on what you said, the car is never driven so I think that the battery had just enought juice to start the car, once. Then when it stalled, there was not enough power to turn the starter but enough to light the lights. When you left it sit it recovered enough to start it again. You didn't say whether or not you charged the battery but even 3 years of life for a "never driven" battery is a life time.

When you drive the car the alt. re-generates the battery so I don't think the problem you described will happen with a new battery and a car that is driven more often.

That's my thoughts,

Bill
