After reading a ton of posts on this topic. I think I am going to do this myself. I called American Plastic chrome but they can no longer plate a Chevelle dash due to size. I had one question, has anybody tried the Rustolium chrome paint on the edges rather than the testors paint stick. I know it sounds a bit harder but I am concerned with finish.
Thanks

No reply from anyone so I tried the chrome paint and so far it looks absolutly fantastic. I sprayed an area next to the remaining chrome edge and really could not see any difference. After that I did the rest and it really is nice. Not sure what the down side is, but it looks like all I have to do is mask the chrome paint and do the black. Sure beats waiting 12 weeks.

Hi BillE,
I'm about ready to start the dash restoration process on my '71 Chevelle SS (original).
I want the dash to look perfect, but don't really want to spend the $800 to have it rechromed and painted black.
Do you still feel yours looks perfect???
Is it possible to post (email) a few close up photos of you dash?
Thanks in advance,
Desert Heat

I have recently restored my 70 SS dash, Here is the process I followed that worked well.
Use Krylon #1613 Semi Flat Black in a spray can. This was recomended to me by a dash restorer. The color is as close to original as you will find.
Mask off as necessary and paint the rim areas using the testor chrome paint you mentioned using. However I found that the best finish is obtained by using a small air sprayer (model stores) and thinning the paint slighly as necessary. This will look much better than trying to hand paint the areas, and will prevent streaks or lines. Hope that helps, thanks Grant.
