i took some pic's of the sail panal areas on both of my chevelles and on the last 2 pictures i circled the areas i have questions about the pic where it has one circle and says cut out is where im missing a section of metal that holds the rear window headliner trim and the other pic whit 2 circles is where it has the full metal piece and another plastic/metal [iece at the bottom which looks like its a moulding piece to hold on the sail panal
so my question is can any one tell me where or how to get these pieces and if these cars use the larger sail panals or the small ear muff sail panals and if they use the larger ones how are they held in place i see a few clips left on there but how would attach them to the carboard panal do you cut slits in the panal before you cover them and then put um in to place some how or what is that piece at the bottom that i circled is that some thing that holds the sail panals together

Tony,
I did my own headliner and I am happy with the outcome except for the sail panels. I have reglued them twice and the material seems to keep coming loose. What holds them in is the backseat and the trim around the backwindow. There is a metal clip that held the original in place that was gules to the original sail panel, I have been unable to get mine right. I am going to take mine to a local shop and have then cover my visors and properly do the sail panels.

When I did my sail panels I used a product called Pliobond, It's an industrial contact cement. It comes in a 3 FL.OZ bottle. I will GUARANTY you, if used as directed you will never have to worry about the two coming apart. And you can buy it at any good hardware store. My car has the large sail panel, and mine is held in place by the chrome around the back window, and the trim around the rear window.

It's hard to tell if your car came with the large or small sail panels. Rule of thumb is the early models came with the small and the later ones came with the large.

My car was built in Dec of 65 at the leeds plant and had the large. I would think that there would be a lot of factors as to when they changed over, and I would suspect that the assy plant would use all of the remaining stock befor they started using the newer/large panels. all this considered, there would be a very large gap, and vary from plant to plant, as to when the small stopped and the large started, IMO.

My suggestion to you is to use the one thats going to be easyer for you to install. unless your car was one of the very first ones off the assy line, I bet there wouldnt be anyone who could say for sure if your car had the large or small panels. If I get the opportunity today, I will take a digital photo of mine and send it to you.
