There should be room to mount a 6-9 speaker in the front dash in the middle, facing up toward rear view mirror. This is tedius work, not alot of room. Sometimes you can only get one hand up in dash. You must work from under dash. This not a mandatory speaker in my opinion. I would concentrate on the two rear speakers. You can get in trunk, you will see two holes in metal to install two 6-9 speakers. You will need to take a knife and cut the cardboard dash pad to open holes. Make sure you cut holes smaller then speaker covers! You may need second person to push bolts down from inside car to trunk area where you secure speakers, good luck. dave

On a 70 the front speaker is a 5*10, just a little bigget thana 6*9, I had a similar issue and I got two 4" speakers, mounted them to a 1/8th inch piece of plywood cut to fit the 5*10 speaker hole- worked great. two 4" speakers will sound better than 1 6*9 or 5*10 in my opinion. I have also mounted speakers in the door, but now regret cutting the door panel, there were also troubles with window clearing the speaker inside to door when the window was down. I would try the 4" speakers in the front dash, and mount other speakers in the rear deck. Usually round speakers are considered to sound better than oblong (6*9), you could also use the same trick I told you for the front (fabing a mounting plate) to mount some 6 1/2" speakers in the rear deck. Just some ideas for you

My advice is not to install 6X9 in the dash. It is incorrect (that word again) but more importantly it is tight fit. 4X10s are what were originaly in the dash. I would not cut the package tray/trunk for rear mounting. It is a shame to cut and you may latter regrett it. You can have a nice stereo effect by enclosing the rear speakers in boxes available from most audio stores and mounting them on the package tray.

I used replacement kick panels from http://www.custom-autosound.com/kickpane.htm

They come with really cheap speakers, but will fit without any modifications. I replaced the speakers that came with the kickpanels, with some component speakers from Boston Aucoustics. The passanger side is no problem. You do not need to cut anything, just use a 1/2 inch spacer that comes with the speakers. On the drivers side, the e brake pedal is the major obsticle. If anyone knows how to reposition the pedal, I am all ears. For now I am planning on replacing the pedal ebrake with a lever mounted between the seats.

I would go for the 6 x 9's in the rear deck. The bolt pattern is there but you will need to cut out some metal that is in the way. Tin snips work good. I second the motion not to cut holes in the door panels although you would probably get your best sound from them. I went with the factory front kick panel speaker grills and stuck some good B. A. speakers in them. They sound just OK, was expecting more from them. Just unbloted the E brake and bolted it back in when finished.

Please don't start hacking up the sheetmetal. Use the original mounting places by making a plywood baffle and mounting a smaller speaker or using the correct size speaker. The kick panels are the right place to install the front stereo speakers. Don't cut up the door or the door panel.

I bought one of those dremel rotary tools and cut those holes for the speakers right on the back seat shelf of my 66' it works great with the new speakers.
