: Another ss dash question
Doug's 72 Sep 12th, 99, 10:32 PM Hi,
I have a question about the style of gauges in a ss dash. I have a 72 Monte Carlo SS dash, which doesn't have the gauges (shell only). I have an opprotunity to purchase gauges from a 70 71 chevelle. Is the mounting the same for 70 to 72? or is it different. I'm not concerned about originality, but want a minimal of problems when I go to install this dash in my car.
Thanks for your responces.
Doug
Havoc Sep 12th, 99, 11:52 PM Yeah, the mounting should be the same, just watch out if the Monte dash has the hole cut out for the seatbelt warning light. I made that mistake... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
The seatbelt warning light is somewhere above the ash tray.

Hugh Sep 13th, 99, 2:21 PM The mounting is the same. '71 and '72 guages are the same (white numbering). '70 guages have light-green tinted numbering. You are going to need a dash harness for the guages dash. You will not be able to use your harness from the Malibu Sweep style dash. Make sure that you specify A/C or non A/C when purchasing a used harness from someone.
stevenb8 Sep 13th, 99, 4:48 PM In 72 all dashes got a seat belt warning light. I had a 72 I sold with a non ss dash and it had a seat belt light and my current 72 convertable ss dash car also has a seat belt warning light.
Doug's 72 Sep 13th, 99, 8:30 PM Thanks for the info. I kind of though that they would be the same mounting, but thought I'd ask the 'experts' just to be sure.
No point in buying something, and then having to sell it again because it was the wrong one. (Like I have never done that before)
I realize that I will have to change over the wiring harness, but if that's the biggest job, I'm up for it.
I thought that the AC wiring was a seperate harness? Could I have been miss-informed again?
Thanks,
Doug
1Quik7D Sep 13th, 99, 8:55 PM I think your right about the AC wiring harness. I am pretty sure that it is seperate on my 70. It runs from the AC components behind the dash, through the fire wall to the appropriate plugs. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Havoc Sep 14th, 99, 8:40 AM Yeah, the Air Cond harness is seperate, but I think it may tie into the dash harness at some point, so that would account for a difference between dash harnesses in AC and non AC cars. I wish I had the assembly manual here, I'd be able to tell your for sure.
Hugh Sep 14th, 99, 10:52 AM The AC harness is a separate harness, but it ties into the regular harness at several points and it has some different connectors to the htr control panel, etc... you could use the Malibu AC wiring and tie it into a non AC SS harness, but it is work and requires carful mapping. I had a harness for a guages dash with AC and I used it on a Guages dash for non AC and I had to unravel the harness and take out quite a few wires and put in a couple of them, plus change some connectors. So it is less of a hassle if you start with the right harness!
Doug's 72 Sep 19th, 99, 8:42 PM Thanks guys, I do appreaciate the help.
