71 Malibu, I'm trying to remove the latch mechanism from the glovebox door so I can repaint it. What's the trick to getting it apart?

Been a very long time since I did one. I'll still take a shot. Hope I am not confusing with later model!!! Insert key, turn key I believe if you look at inside latch base housing there is a notch use paper clip or small ice pick punch, look for a small piece that you push in to release cyl. from housing. Man, this is very hard to describe!! If I had it in front of me it would already be apart. Good luck, Karl

I ended up taking the door to Southwester Classic Chevy Parts in Arlington. The tumbler came out, but the threads of the barrel nut were welded tight. We ended up breaking the thing. But it now has a new lock.
