: bucket seat install
Jim Mac Feb 12th, 05, 10:21 PM Hi, I just pick up a set of original buckets out of a 70 chevelle, the seat tracks were included, the question I have is, is this a bolt in for my 72 elky with bench? I paid $100 for the pair they've been reupholstered, not torn but the vynle on the sides is a little hard, he has the matching back seat for $25 unfortunatly my elky doesn't have a back seat lol was $100 reasonable? thanks Jim
Malibu Jimbu Feb 12th, 05, 11:21 PM This is not a bolt in, unless it came with buckets originally. You have to buy track brackets and have them welded to the floor pan. I just obtained a set of buckets for my 67, and thought I'd only need brackets for the inbd. tracks on both seats, and use the original otbd. mounting holes. Now I am finding information (I haven't fit them in the car yet), that the bucket seats will rub the seat belt retractors. Think I have to weld 2 new brackets for both bucket seats, moving them inboard (away from the retractors) an inch. Don't know what years this is applicable for?
Jim Mac Feb 12th, 05, 11:30 PM Thanks malibu jimbu, I started to go back through the old posts and finding this stuff out, Is there any reason I couldnt put a bolt through a piece of 1/8 in. plate and bolt that through the floor with a plate under the car to correctly line it up? When we were kids we use to use 2x4 for mounting plates. Jim
Texas70 Feb 12th, 05, 11:56 PM Here is one of the inboard brackets I installed in my '70 http://users.ev1.net/~jaaustin/chevelle/bracket4.jpg and the outboard....this is the one that needs to be moved inward slightly to clear the seatbelt retractor....this was just before I welded it in http://users.ev1.net/~jaaustin/chevelle/bracket3.jpg
Jim Mac Feb 13th, 05, 12:10 AM thanks for the pictures texas 70, for a daily driver, not a restoration could a just use grade 8 bolts and a stack of fender washers? or is the brackets for a safety concern? I do have access to a mig welder if I have to weld them in, I was hoping to bolt them in tommorrow to see how they look in the car. Jim
waltsfastz Feb 13th, 05, 2:38 AM I fixed a Mustang seat like that back in my high school years( not that long ago). My buddy was heavyset and ripped the front outter seat mounting stud from the floor boad. I done like you said and cut a piece of 4X4X1/2 stock and ran a grade 8 bolt through it and up through the seat mount. Worked the best for the next year that he had it. However there is no way in hell I would do that to a car that I cared anything about or wanted to make it look good(either Camaro or Chevell)
Texas70 Feb 13th, 05, 9:40 AM Jim,
I would go with the brackets. I researched this over a year ago and this is the correct and safe way to make the bench to bucket seat swap. I think I got my brackets at Ground Up.
Jim Mac Feb 13th, 05, 10:49 PM Thanks for all the input! turns out three of us went in together and just bought the rest of the chevelle I'm getting the body so I guess the seats will just go back in the car. Jim
Malibu Jimbu Feb 14th, 05, 11:39 PM Texas 70, Nice pix! I have to do mine in the next month or so....wish I had a garage like yours. Did you just weld the track mounts on top of the floor pan? And, are the orig bench seat mts still there?
