I'm looking at buying this 66-67 4 speed console. It has a tach where the clock goes. I told the guy I've never heard of a tach going there from the factory. He said it is rare. The part number he gave me is GM 987099. He claims it is very rare. I can't find anything to back it up. Does anyone know if gm offered a such option of the tach in the console?

From the number it appears to be an accessory item, i.e. sold over the counter for installation after delivery. As far as mounting it in the console, not sure if that's where it was intended to go. From a practical perspective, though, tachs were usually not intended to be mounted where you'd have to look down and away from the road ahead...

Don't be taken in by that Bull.... No 67 Console ever came with a tach in place of the clock.

That's how the Impala's were (with clock) but not the Chevelles.

Some Olds in the sixties placed the tach on the console, like the 88/Starfire through '66. Also the Cutlass/442 could have a console-mounted tach in 1964-65.

It may have BEEN an option, Original Parts Group sells Tachs that go in place of the clock. Coming in white and green numbers to accomidate the differnt years. I would think if OPGI sold it as a resto part it may have been an option. www.opgi.com (http://www.opgi.com) Im not possitive, im just saying is all.

Hey, I appreciate the comments. It is a 66 67 4 speed chevelle console but this guy still insisted it came from the factory like that. I told him 66 had the knee knocker tach and 67 had the left blinker tach mounted on the dash. He still said it was a rare factory option. I guess the ole boy is on crack or something. I did not buy it. Thanks to all. graemlins/waving.gif

If the console is good just put the correct clock in the hole to make everything right.

To the right of the console he cut out a section and mounted 3 gauges. He once $400, not worth it all cut up like that.

man it's late, he wants (not once) $400. The section he cut out is the top forward part where the shifting pattern emblem would go. Ruined that part. graemlins/clonk.gif
