I have a '72 chevelle 350 with a vaccuum leak near the brake booster. When I turn the car off, I can hear air being sucked in somewhere near the booster. There is a vaccuum hose that comes off the back of my intake manifold and goes into a plastic fitting then into the booster. It is near this fitting that I can hear the leak. I went to a parts house a couple of weeks ago, and they told me they don't sell a fitting like that. Any suggestions as to how I can narrow down the leak? Also, any thoughts on what could happen if the leak got any worse? Would it just cause my brakes to be a little harder? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try squirting choke cleaner (the aerosol kind) in the areas you suspect of leaking. When the engine takes in the cleaner through the leak ,it will speed up noticeably.

You can get the brake vacumn check valve (the plastic piece) at most worthless chain auto parts stores. They are sold in the "HELP" section. The red blister packs. Cost about $3.00 and include the rubber gasket around the valve. To change, remove old valve, remove old gasket, install new gasket, install new valve. A little lubricant on the new valve will help it slide into the gasket easier. Cured my leak. Course it could be the hose itself too.

Also a word of advice if you do end up getting new hose, remember that it is 11/32" hose. Most worthless stores only carry 5/16 or 3/8 and they will try to tell you it fits, but the 5/16 will be a bear to get on, and the 3/8 will have a hard time sealing, causing you more leaks. So goto a good parts store or try Year One or Ground up they can sell you a couple feet of the right stuff. Mat ACES #2424

I used the 5/16" hose on my brake booster.
To get the hose onto the fittings all you need is a little lubricant(regular motor oil) and slightly heat the end of the hose(a cigarette lighter will do the job) and ever so gently twist the hose over the barbed fitting.
