Has anyone done any customizing on their dash and have a pic to share?

What year are you looking for? I'd venture to guess that there's a custom setup for every year represented here.

OOPS! I should have guessed from your user name. Check out Wes Colby's 70 and Phil Harkin's 72. I'll try to find links to their pics.

This isn't Wes's, but it is another pic of another member's dash, SS540.

I saw Wayne's interior at "Cruisin the Coast" Friday. The pics look good, but they don't do it justice. It's really nice "up close and personal". http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Randy, now I know why you resurrected Mikey's old post. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

BTW, I have some pics of my birch dash panel on my site. It's "redneck style". http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Hey Randy, nice pics. Those set ups look fantastic! Quick question. What kind of flat panel stock is best used? I will be using an old bezel for my 65 for the outer shell of the dash and want to know the best material to use for the center to mount the gauges.

Preferrably something in a 70 but anything with similar dash would be cool.

I've only worked with 70 - 72 models. But I'll take a stab and guess that sheet aluminum or stainless would be the best bet. The problem is, no one wants to sell sheet aluminum in small quantities. They only want to sell you full sheets which are ten feet long. I have a hard time finding metal for these projects. The stuff that's available at True Value isn't really thick enough. I'd recommend at least .071 thick T6 aircraft aluminum.

So nobody has a custom 67 dash?

Ask and ye shall receive. Here's a shot of the GR8PMKN (http://www.dalesplace.com/images/chevelle/frontseat3.jpg) dash.

Edit: The stereo has since been moved to the center of the console face and an A/C vent to the old stereo hole.

Would be nice... Aside from a mech oil pressure gauge (for backup), the space is used for various control boxes, relays, and wiring for the electric windows, doors, digital dash controller and remote window and doors controller. Electrically, it's pretty challenged behind there http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Uncle- I really like that dash setup!!! Putting it behind the existing sloped plastic, and leaving the idiot light area alone is Exactly what i want to do.

Are the idiot lights (gen, turn signals, brake, etc) still hooked up and working in the old spot?

Any pics of the actual housing before it was mounted?

Thanks!!!!
Ben

There's a hamster in a rolling cage. that's what powers all those fancy electronic gizmos! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

FYI, pictures of my custom gauges are in the signature below. I took out the idiot gauge row to allow for the next size larger gauges. I incorporated the lights into my new plate, after all just taking out the lights won't make me stop being and idiot. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Just send me some mailing addresses. I can send a cardboard cutout of the template, then you can transfer the pattern to plexiglas or aluminum. The holes for the guages will be smaller than the actual size needed for the opening, so you'll have to cut them to final size. The person who originally came up with this idea used .080 thikc plexiglas, and it turned out fine. I prefer aluminum, but sheet aluminum is a bit hard to find.

Uncle

Ben, see Randy's post just below yours. Randy is the man!! Couldn't have done this without him. He's right (and has done it the right way) to have the holes ever so slightly too small. I hand fit the guages to the holes with a Dremel tool - just right, not too loose or too tight.
Yes, the idiot lights and blinker indicators all work in their original location. I did replace the 30 yr. old dash bulbs while it was apart. Looks great, works like a champ. I'm really glad I used the electronic speedo - very easy to calibrate if you change rearend gears or tire size.
