My steering has a little play in it. I know I need to adjust the setscreww on the box, but which way. Right now, the setscrew is sticking-up about 1/2 inch. Should I turn it into the box to tighten, or out of the box (c.w. or c.c.w.)?

The box is out of a mid seventies Trans-Am, and currently in my '66 with a 396 and the factory power-steering. I would just fool around with the adjustment if there were more room, so I am trying do the job only once. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Hold the center screw and loosen the locknut. Then tighten the center screw clockwise until it snugs up and back off 1/4 turn. Then hold center screw from turning and tighten locknut.

I've read that this "preload" adjustment shouldn't be made because it can accelerate wear. However, I have tightened up numerous boxes, ever so slightly, with good results. If you screw the setscrew in, you will tighen it up a bit. Leave some slack in the wheel, don't take it all up, some is designed in.

1966_L78, I saw your post on steering box adjustment and thought I'd reply. First, you need to make sure there are no worn parts in the steering linkage, then if all is ok a steering box adjustment is in order. First, make sure your wheels are straight ahead, then hold the screw and loosen the locknut several turns, now slowly tighten the screw until it starts to feel snug, that is where you want to leave it. As you are holding the screw, tighten the locknut. If you tighten the screw and it never gets snug your box is worn out and will have to be replaced. You should still have several threads showing above the locknut when you are done. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info everyone. I went home and tightened the box, and now it feels much better, although that is only in the garage. I can't wait to get it out on the road...
