i checked the numbers on my motor of my 72 chevelle. i found my potential vin# on there.
(could read the vin tag)
what i need to know is what the other #s mean. the motor is a small block with numbers as follows.

t045?KA.

the ? should either be a "0","Q",or a "C"

what motor is this.???
could this be a 72 chevelle engine
vin# on motor is "1B658125". dont know what the 1 means. it may be a scratch.

from what ive gathered so far, my vin will be as follows (if the motor is original)

1d37?2b658125

You really need that first letter. Chevy used 3 letter suffix's to ID motor series. My motor is a CRA which is a LG3 305 This may not Posively ID as a 72 since some combos strech over a few years of identical spec motors. I have a book with all of the codes at home ( if that is actually possible) There is a date code under the timing cover and a block casting number on the top of the bellhousing drivers side, those will help narrow down your ID. What Vin Code did you have for the motor ID, post your whole VIN if you have it. There were I belive 3 small blocks for 72 a 130? HP 307, a 165 HP 2 BBL 350 ( I had one) and a 200 HP Qjet 350. This is out of my head, so correct me if I am wrong

the VIN is the problem. i cant read it from the vin tag. rusted out. i found the vin on the motor. but i dont believe it has an engine code on it. i think it starts with a "b" and six or seven digits after it. i think the "b" means baltmore. as for the vin tag, i cant read it...SEE ORIGINAL POSTING. IT WAS EDITED.

If it is a CKA this would be a 72, 350, 2-v carb, 165hp, L65, originally mated to a manual tranny.
If this is the orginal matching # engine then your VIN would be 1D37HB658125

My Vin is rusted out also. Other places to check:
Sticker on drivers door, Mine had one listed the Gross Vehicle weight and VIN near the door latch (white and blue sticker) Cowl tag, on yours near the master cyllinder on the firewall, mine was on top of the cowl, on pass side below the hood seal, This will have the front of the VIN with the engine code, paint and other options
Build sheet This is ususally stuffed in the rear seat springs, My last few chevys all had this still. If you find it be carefull, a 27 year piece of paper is quite fragile. This will have the complete VIN and codes for nearly all the parts in the car, Build sheets are cool. I will post some of the 72 codes when I get home from work
Good Luck
