I have a 69'SS with astro-ventilation and I need to take them off to replace the ventilation cables (there are 2 per side). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's been awhile, If I forgot anything hopefully someone will jump in.

1. Loosen or remove sill plate.
2. Might need to loosen pillar post as well?
3. Pull back carpet.
4. Can't remember but seems like there are one or two screws up high?
5. Remove knobs, you can almost plan on breaking these to get them off. Replacements are available.
5. At this point you should be able to start to loosen it up, there is a heavy putty like seal around the vent itself that holds the kick panel in pretty tight.
6. Disconnect speakers (if applicable)
7. Now you should be able to get to the end of the cables and release them from the flapper doors.

Hope this helps did the best I could from memory.

We are on the right track...

Remove the sill plate.
Remove the Grill. This should pry/pop off.
Remove 5 screws in grill recess.
(Emergency Brake Pedal Assy, may have to be loosened or removed).
Remove Astro Vent Assy on dash.
Remove upper cable from flapper for astro vent on dash.
Now remove kick panel. (Upper and Lower cable will come out with the kick panel. The lower cable should be able to be left conected to the lower door as it will come out with the kick panel).
Ther should be a single clip holding each cable to the kick panel.

When reassembling you can use "Rope Caulk" to replace the caulk behind the panel around the lower vent. You can find it at the hardware store. Do not skip this step or your carpet will get wet whenever it rains or you wash your car.

Mark & BC,

Brian is right on the money here. I just recently reinstalled mine, so it's fresh in my mind, and he's got every detail covered.

Are you sure you need to replace your cables? Unless they are really trashed, you might be able to refurbish them. I was able to straighten out some kinks in mine, and using WD40, get them freed up. The plastic shielding that covers the cable (unseen when it is installed) was all cracked into pieces on mine. I pushed them back together, slipped over a piece of black heat shrink tubing, and hit it with the heat gun. Good as new. Put new chrome knobs on and they're good to go.

Easy does it Chris! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif No big tools needed here just a little time, patience and a little TLC. Besides it's almost Valentines day... Be nice to your Chevelle! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
