View Full Version : changing a vinyl color to white

Keeping with my usual thriftiness, http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif I have a green front seat cover and a saddle rear seat cover for the convertible for less than half the normal price. Problem is, I want white. Will this be any different than dying another color? What is the best dying procedure to make certain that the other colors don't show through the white? Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Great deal,I'd do the same thing if I had to.The best dye to use is SEM.Use their vinyl prep before you dye them and you should have no problems.I've dyed dark green to white twice and have had no problems.Just use SEM and you'll be fine

I was changing to a 12 bolt rear and my parents decided to have the back porch dug out. The car is actually beside the dirt. You can probably imagine the threats I had to lay down about any ocurrences of body damage. Thanks for the suggestion.

4speed,

You just sprayed the SEM white over the cleaned vinyl? Does it work on the seats? How long have they lasted with regular use? Does the paint stay flexible?

Yes, the vinyl will stay very flexable. Make sure you use the SEM vinyl prep as mentioned before, this step is very important. Do exactly what the directions say and you will have a very long lasting and durable finish on your seats. Also use an all purpose vinyl cleaner on them before the Sem vinyl prep, it will help open the poors of any silicones that are there and will help make the vinyl prep work better the first time as that stuff is kind of exspensive. If you get a chance I posted the way detail shops clean vinyl professionally on this site, just click on interiors and go to clean up you'll see it. Make sure you omit the part about the vinyl protectant though. I have a lot of experiance on this if you have any problems I can really help you through this. Have fun it's really easy to do..... Also don't use any vinyl protectant on the fresh dye for at least 90 days or you will run into problems, after that it's no big deal.

Jerry,

I do believe they are talking about SEM Vinyl Dye not SEM paint.

As others have said, works great, looks good and holds up great.

OOPS! Sorry mr 4 speed, didn't mean to step on your toes. I just got a little carried away and didn't read who he was replying to. By the way my wife says I am obsessed, but I tell her I'm just goal oriented but she's not buyin' it!

What about changing the color of seatbelts? I have a black set of 66 belts I would like to turn brown, it that possible with the same type of dye. What would be the best way to accomplish this? thanks

66rj, Seat belts pretty much are what they are because of the kind of material they are made of. I have worked in detail, body and upholstry shops for many years and seat belts have always been a hard thing to clean let alone do a color change on. In your case going from black to any other color is going to be really hard if even possible. I'd be interested to hear if anyone out there has ever been able to manage this without having to change to new material. I would try and find someone who deals with antique and classic car upholstry and see what they can do or if they have any other resources to point you to.

davide, that's what i was thinking, going from black to any other color would be very hard to dye, I guess i'll keep searching from a brown set of belts. thanks for the reply
