: Bucket Seat Swap

I have a 71 Chevelle with factory 4-speed/bench seat combo. I'd like to install bucket seats, but due the difficulty in finding and the price of the originals, I'd be happy with a basic, comfortable seat out of whatever. Any ideas as to what would fit with only reasonable modifications?

Thanks,
Tim

I don't know about Novas for certain but I am almost possitive that seats from 70-72 Monte Carlos would fit. I would think the same would be true for the Nova. Seats from either of these cars are probably just as expensive as the Chevelles though. Come to think of it any GM car of that time and body size should fit fine ie;Grand Prix, Skylark, etc. These others could probably be found a little cheaper also.

Please be careful when selecting the seats. I am doing almost the reverse where I am building a Nova for a daily driver (since the 468 in my Chevelle is not too good on gas...) and wanted to swap the bench out for some buckets. Just this last weekend, I was at a junkyard and came across a Chevelle that had a set of high-back bucket seat still in it and in decent condition...great! I made the deal for $20 and that I would pull them and went to work. After I pulled up the carpet, I realized these were not factory and definitely not installed properly. Only one bolt was actually bolted into the actual seat mounting hole, while the rest simply had small bolts with washers and nuts run thru the floor and bolted down!! DUMB, DUMB!! This provides NO protection if something were to happen. As it turns out, since there were no wheels on the car and it sat pretty low, and also due to fact that I didn't want to get down in the mud, I simply moved the one 'factory' style bolt and used a metal bar I found to pry the rest right through the floor!! I could not believe how easy they came out so you can imagine if you were in an accident? Anyways, my point to all this is that I believe the Camaro/Nova buckets came with a different footprint for mounting. It is possible to use them, just use the proper backing plates, and bolts. I have not tried to put them in the Nova yet (they need freshened up a bit) but if you need more info, please email me.

Anything is possible if you can fabricate the necessary brackets. I loved those big cushy full-size bench seats back in the 70's, so I installed a '67 Buick Electra seat in a '56 Belair hdtp. Later on I installed a '69 cadillac bench seat in a '69 chevelle 300 deluxe. Sure beat what was in there to begin with, and with that fold-down center armrest I felt like I was riding on a throne! (not to mention the working six way motors)
These are extreme exampples, but If they worked, so will the buckets in your car.

Resto places sell brackets for mounting buckets in a bench car. I don't know how well they work. I am sure you still need to do some drilling and reworking for them to fit.

The brackets are cheap

I got the buckets for my 72 out of a 70 GTO, but looked around alot before I bought. Mine were in great shape and fit perfect. I know that all GM A-body muclecars from 68-72 came with the same basic style buckets. Camaros have a lower back and a thinner shape and some Novas has a fat lower cushion. Stick with the A-bodys they all have the same bolt pattern.

68 to 72 Nova buckets definitely will fit a Chevelle. Since 74 Novas were still basically the same body style as earlier years I would guess that they would fit also. Novas and Chevelles shared the same "Strat-O-Bucket" seats.

Did somebody mention buckets? There's some guy "6t7gto" http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif with a power seat track on eBay. Item #269358278. And some bucket seats. 66 w/white headrests. 66 recliner w/black headrests. And 68 w/black headrests. Email me if you'd like better pics.
