I'm no expert; however, if I were faced with the problem I would get to work with some 600 then 1000 sandpaper [wet/dry 3M]. ...keeping the "dust" off with a rag. When I was done with the paper, I would wipe it down with some thinner on a clean rag and then paint.

I used some laquer thinner to get the old paint off my dash bezel. Came off great and all of the original grain is still intact. Try it on a little spot first smile.gif .

If your budget allows, you can send your dash out to have it restored to a company in British Columbia, CV Vacuum Platers.
www.cvvacuumplaters.com (http://www.cvvacuumplaters.com)
I checked about 3 mos. ago and the price was $380.00 Cdn. There is another company in Michigan I believe called American Plastic Chrome.
Another option if you want to have it back to original.
