: Conv Top Window Loose

I have two convertibles, a 69 Chevelle and a 95 Mustang. Both have glass rear windows (Chevelle's obviously aftermarket). Anyway, both of these windows are coming loose from the top. I have not found anything reasonable to fix this. Tried epoxy, which sort of works, but looks bad after a few months and eventually comes loose.

Does anyone know a "proper" way to attack this problem?

Waltn, The glass is in a seperate piece from the main part of the top, I don't think there is a good fix short of replacing the piece that has the window in it, but that means peeling back the main top! At that point you have to way out the dollars of repairing vs. springing for a whole new top. Fix the velle, let the stang rot http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Just kidding.
Sorry I don't know of a cheap or easy fix.
Good Luck!

Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. It is not clear to me that this is a separate piece, though I have seen adds for this "piece". However, my shop manual has zippo about convertibles in it, and I'm no expert. I guess I need the body manual, or is that also devoid of rag-top info?

My 72 convertible is doing the same thing. The shop wants $1300 to put a new top on because of the glass and a few tears in the top. The guy did say people try to hot glue for temporary fixes but claims nothing will be permanent. Im gonna try the $2 hot glue fix for now.

A GM Body Service Manual for the year of your car has convertible top information.
The rear curtain (window) is seperate from the main part of the top. It gets installed first, and then the rest gets installed over it.

O.K. Thanks, as usual.

I got my hands on some of the 3M two sided tape that you use to install trim on the body. Sticks pretty good and is holding the window (in the Chevelle only). Time will tell how long this lasts. I ain't gonna cough up for a new top, because the REST of my top is OK. If I have to, I'll take off the top and put in a new curtain and then put it back, but I'm NOT looking forward to that one!

I just peeled out the glass window from a 72 cutlass convertible, and it seemed like it was just glued in place to the material. There has got to be something that will work, what was that glue the blues brothers used on the Good Ole Boys' motorhome? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Yep, they're glued in there. I figure that whatever it is has to be flexible. First thing I thought of was clear RTV. Problem is, though, with the top on the car, holding that in place while something like RTV dries is practically impossible. If you use something like "5 minute Epoxy", you can hold it till it dries, but after a few months, it gets brittle and gives up.

No easy fix here, unfortunately. The biggest problem, even if you could find an adhesive that would work, is that it's in a very awkward position to work on. Maybe you can find a trim shop that will replace the rear curtain only. You could save some money with a plastic curtain instead of hard glass. If you insist on trying a repair yourself, you might try Gorilla glue-seems to stick to anything, strong too, but has to be clamped.
