: Proper dash vents for 1970...

I've been told the proper dash vents for a 1970 are smooth slats, and the 71-72 had the textured vent slats. I've also been told it didn't matter whether they were textured or not.

Can someone clue me in here. I'm restoring the dash, and don't want any weak links. I happen to have some brand new 1971 vents, but won't install them in my '70 unless I get the nod from you fine folks. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Sean,

My 70 still has the original vents in them, they are smooth. I note some catalogues refer to 70 as textured. Perhaps later 70's had the textured ones.My car was built in Jan of 70. What were your originals like?

I want to change mine but I can't figure out how to get the drivers side out without removing the dash, it looks impossible to do.

The passenger side looks fairly simple, but of course that one on my car is in great condition. The center ones look like a pest to change as the housing that holds them is glued together.

I've heard and know that the '70 models have smooth ones and '71 & '72's have the textured ones. In one catalog, it was listed as the other way around (Year One)but I really think that is a typo. I've never seen a '70 with textured ones before. Mine has the smooth ones and was built in November of '69.

That's right 70's are smooth 71-72's have the grain texture. As for changing the deflectors its not as hard as it looks. The dash pad needs to be removed. The pass. side and center deflectors are easy to remove, but I must admit the drivers side is a bit more difficult(I removed the headlight switch to give me more room). Now for replacing the center deflectors I used a dremel tool with a cut-off wheel and separated the two halves and then re-assembled them using JB-weld or other suitable adhesive. No problem.

Sean,

Saw your response to the build sheet post. In any case, didn't mean to come on strong, don't know what got into me that day.

Anyway, I ordered my A/C vents from Ground Up - I should have them this week. They had them as smooth for 70. I'll let you know how the quality is.

I finally had a chance this weekend to remove mine from my dash. Getting the driver side vent out of the dash was a chore, I had to remove the head light switch, the speaker and bracket, unbolt the steering column and then remove several dash bolts. Needless to say it was a pain in the you no what but it's out.

Once out I did what Heavy 71 advised, used the dremel to cut the glue seam, worked great and the vents came out of the housing with ease. Putting them back in and gluing them back together should be easy as well.

Thks

Rich

Sean,

Got my AC vents from Ground Up yesterday - Excellent repros, also great fit.

On the side vents I reused the circular felt from my old vents, I preferred those over the ones that came with the vents.

On the center vents you will need to use some foam weather stripping on the top and bottom, I picked that up at Home Depot.

I used the 4 minute JP Weld to re-glue the housings. They came great, I reinstalled them in the dash last night as well.
