Hi all -- I have a 70 SS that I am restoring. I would like to put in an original 70 radio. I have heard that you need the Deep Style knobs vs the Cupped style to fit in the dash. The one I want to buy has the cupped style (am/fm mono) ... the radio is in excellant shape and comes with a 6-month warrenty for a good price.

My fear is that it wont install correctly. The guy told me he tried it in a SS dash he had and it looks like it fits properly.

Anyone have any problems with this or can help me out?

Thanks,

Birddog

Birddog your fears are justified. The cupped style won't work on the SS dash. You can look at a picture of the two style of inner knobs on the home page of Chevelles.com. Select radio tech>what do factory original radios look like>factory radio images>1970>mistakes (upper righthand corner)>70-72.

Can I swap them out and put the deep style?

This is what the guy sent me in response to my question: "I tried this radio in a 70 SS dash which I will be selling soon. The radio fits just fine with these knobs as far as I can tell. I have seen the deep style knobs on AM FM STEREO radio's, but not on AM FM MONO. They require the deep knobs because of the need fro a notched opening in the right hand fader shaft"

Any sense in that?

Seller is an idiot...

ALL radios are the same for a model year, so of course it will fit the dash! A 1970 SS, needs the deep SS style knobs:

The "Malibu" style will fit, but they won't quite reach and sit cock-eyed. The only difference between a stereo and a mono radio in an SS dash, is that stereo of course requires 2 of these deeper knobs that have a control tab, one for balance, the other for fade, where as a mono has a "dummy" knob behind the tuning knob.
