I have a set of Chevelle bucket seats that I always thought were correct for 69-72. They have 69 seat covers on them (I compared the covers in a couple of restoration magazines) and have 69-72 style seat backs. However, they don't have headrests and no provision for headrests either. Someone told me that to be 69-72 they should have headrests. Is this true? Any help on this matter would be greatly appretiated.

All that I have seen had the headrests. Are you sure they weren't re covered and the headrests not re installed ? Didn't 68's have seats without the headrests?

Thanks for the response. I can't be sure that the headrests were never re-installed when the seats were recovered. Is that possible? Would nothing in the headrest support???/frame??? show through the seat covers. Sorry - but I have never taken a seat cover off on a 69-72 to see what lies beneath so I don't know if there is some type of support or frame for the headrest.
You are correct that most 68 seats didn't have headrests but I don't think these are 68 seats because the seat back release is only correct for 69-72.

I think you
can install new seat covers without putting the headrests on. I bet that's what happened.

I have 69 buckets with 68 covers, and did not re-install the headrests when I replaced the covers. I can feel the metal headrest bracketry (no sure if thats the right term)directly underneath the vinyl along the top of the seat.

Every '69 - '72 Chevelle I've seen had headrests, except one. Apparently prior to 1/1/69 you could delete the headrests. It was RPO AR1.

Thanks eveyone. I did some inspection and found that headrest brackets are under the seat covers. They can't be seen, I had to press down in that area to feel them. So, my seats are 69's minus the headrests. Thanks for all the help.
