What can be done with the finish on a plastic dash bezel for my 65 Elky? I actually have three bezels and all need refurbishing. How do I strip the old finish off without destroying the sharp edges and what finish will hold up to replace it.

Any ideas?
Thanks, OLDED

It depends what type of finish you are after. You could have it professionally restored or paint it flat silver (I've seen alot of cars with the silver paint) . Media blasting is one way to remove the crud but I'm not sure what media to use for plastic, I'm sure someone will chime in with more suggestions.
Hope it helps,
Steve

Soda would be about the only safe media on plastic. Why not just buy a reproduction?

Eventually I will probably buy a repop. I want to save as much of the old stuff as is practical.

Any more good opinions for stripping the old finish from the 65 bezel?? I have a blaster I could use with about any media. I have used some OK silver paint on a few things over the years and it would suffice for this - if a good clear is applied..

Thanks

Todd,

I have painted several 65 dashes over the years before the reproductions were available. As stated above, a soda or media blast is best. I gave one a real quick blast with heavily used glass beads already also.

You can simply use sand paper on scratches, then 2 or 3 levels of steel wool to prep the thing. Don't sand the ribbing if you can avoid it. If you use Krylon Bright Silver in only a few very thin coats (either no primer or one very thin coat of it), it come outs fairly decent for a low-cost (and non-original) alternative. A single thin coat of clear afterwards makes it durable. I once had one dash painted professionally with a base-coat clear silver and clearcoat, and was suprised at the end result. It was very durableand resisted scratches very well.

A 65 dash is very hard to spray bomb, and you should use an old broken dash to practice on first.

Rob K.
