I believe you need to hook the linkage from the tranny back to the steering column. These work off the switch at the base of the column.

I had a 72 with factory console and the neutral safety switch and backup light switch were both on the shifter. Not sure what year the switches moved from the column to the shifter, but the 72 definately had em on the shifter.

The console will have its own wiring harness for that. My 69 has the nuetral saftey switch mounted on the shifter.

I believe the switch on your shifter is the same one that is on the column on non-floor shift automatics. At least they look identical in my manual. I have a steering column at home with one on it....I'll see if it has any numbers on it.

There is a trans shifter bracket that allows the use of either or both cable or linkage, this is what I am going to use when I put the console in this winter. It will shift from the horseshoe but indicate gear from the column, this set up allow the continued use of the existing column switch and harness.

Ditto on what Harley said ...get the new tranny bracket, the one that the rod from the steering column goes in, that also has the little arm on it to connect the shifter cable to. It looks very similar to the one you have now exept for this little arm. This will allow your neutral safety, backup-light switch and dash gear shift indicator as it always did.

Also, I think the rod needs to be connected to lock the steering wheel when you put it in park.

Breaker....

You need the "Backdrive rod assy" this is what allows the column to "lock" on some models it also shows the gear position. Best best is to get ahold of a 71/72 assy manual and do the double take to insure you hve it right.
