Hello,

I have I believe a Muncie four speed with main body casting of 3885010. There is no vin info on it, however it does have an assembly date code of P7C06. I believe this means Muncie, 1967, March 6. Is it an M-22? It sits in a 70 Chevelle SS454 (71 LS-5 engine). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P is Muncie. Are you currently driving this car?

If so then you should be able tell, all M22's make a tell tale whinning sound which is where Chevy came up the name "Rockcrusher".

All M22 cases had the front drain plug boss drilled and tapped for a magnetic drain plug. Almost all original drain plugs are magnetic and are stamped with the letter "P" which denotes a passenger car Munice trans.

This info from Chedvy by the numbers 1965-69.

According to your info you definately have a 67 built muncie. one way to tell if it is an M21 or an M22, from 1969 0n back only the M22 had a drain plug, from 70 to 74 they all had them. Also check out September 99 issue of Muscle Car Review magazine, there's an article on how to identify Muncie transmissions. a lot of good info there

Like you, I have a 70 Chevelle with a 67 Muncie tranny. I don't, by any stretch of the imagination, claim to be an expert on transmission sounds, but you should be able to hear a distinct high pitch sound from an M22, especially when downshifting. But if high pitch sounds are out of your hearing range, you may have trouble identifying that certain sound.
