I am looking to replace the mild steel, complete with loose baffels exhaust system in my L34 (stock exhaust manifolds) SS396 1970 TH400 chevelle. Anyone know of a good stainless steel solution that will not blast me out of the car soundwise? I spotted a Borla/SummitRacing system for sale @ summit, but they said it's only for a car with headers. Flowmasters are too loud. Gardner Exhaust makes an excellent aluminized NOS style system, but it's aluminized and costs approx. $550 for my car. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Try calling around to the local shops in your area. One of the shops here strung the exhaust on my 69, its aluminized steel or some such (say won't rust out, still looks perfect) and it ran me $500 to have it done. I supplied my own mufflers.

When I was looking for exhaust I found most shops will make a custom setup for around 500.
Unfortunately, most aftermarket kits are made for cars with headers. But you can still buy a kit, then have a shop make a custom down-pipe to connect the manifolds to the pipes. I would see what your local shops can do for you.

Your out of luck on Stainless for anywhere near $500! Custom shops will do a custom mandrel bent, 2.5" system for around $500-$600.

You will probably be hard-pressed to find a local shop that can do mandrel bends. I have heard these machines cost as much as a house. Most local shops will only do crush bends. If you really want mandrel bends, you will need to get an aftermarket exhaust system for your car and find a local shop that will install it for you.

Thanks, folks, for the good feedback. I'm off to some local exhaust shops to see what they can do.
