: Re-doing interior

I'm working on my first restoration. I'm planning to buy full blown interior kit from one of the suppliers. I was talking to a body shop guy last week that's done a bunch of restorations and he says he subs out all the interior work because it's "too difficult to do correctly...especially seats". He cautioned me not to attempt it. Any truth to any of this? I don't do body work cause I know that skill/experience are the name of the game but I thought those hog pliers looked pretty simple to work. Maybe you need a little practice. Before I talked to him, the only thing I was a bit worried about was the headliner! What's the story?

Thanks.

I have done seats myself and they were pretty easy. Same goes for the door panels. I think that the headliner will be the most challenging. Try a search on these topics and get some idea of what others have done.

PUI Interiors makes custom seat-covers that are easy enough to install by yourself...with your hog pliers....but can be time consuming.

Yella67ss,

A persons limitations are between their own two ears. Give it a try.

Bubba,
Trust me...I'm not afraid to try anything. I just like to know what I'm in for ahead of time.

Yella, I have instlled a interior kit in my `68, with a little help from my wife, and it turned out excellent. take your time, dont think your going to do it in a day, but its not that hard. Right now I`m doing a `70 Chevelle, and [we] have half of the headliner in, it took 2 days about 2 hours a day to get this far. The small hooks on the lip dont really dig in to the headliner, so were glueing it about a foot at a time, and clamping it with a paint stick and vice-grips its holding well and lookin really good, if you have time you can save yourself a lot of money and be proud of your car when finished. Any questions e-mail me, I am in every other day. Stan...

I have done about a half dozen kits now and it's no big thing. My first was on an old volkswagen I have and I have had people ask me to do theirs after seeing the job I did. There is a cheesy video that I got with the first kit that helped alot. The majority of the work is prep work. Not to discoourage you at all but check on the price to get it done at a shop. I am working on an el camno and planned on doing the upholstery and headliner but once I saw the prices for the headliner and upholstery I checked a couple local shops and the price difference was less than a $100 for them to do it, and if you add in buying hog-ring pliers and supplies it may not be worth your time. You can still easily do the door panels and carpet but just make sure it is worthwhile.
