: 1970 dash restoration worth it?
Jagarang Mar 3rd, 03, 6:24 PM Any sugestions or opinions on where I can send my 70 SS dash to be reconditioned? Would it be better to buy a repro from GroundUp even though I've heard there are alot of poor fitment issues? What could I expect to pay for a reconditioning of my dash?
Pro Street Garry Mar 3rd, 03, 7:12 PM I sent my Elky dash out to Just Dashes (http://www.justdashes.com/index.html)
Came out great! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

J_Fairchild Mar 3rd, 03, 7:37 PM Jagarang, If you do a search, you'll see there has been a lot of discusion on this. If you are looking to have it rechromed and detailed it can be pricey and take a few months. If your handy, you can redo it yourself with the proper paint and silver paint pen.It all depends what results you are looking for. While doing the search you'll see some very nice work that members have done on there own.......Jim.
PS. Pro Street Garry, that dash look's great, very nice! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
BK72SS Mar 3rd, 03, 8:46 PM I remember looking in to have this done with my 72 chevelle SS dash and the price was $725.00 and that included them painting the black on the dash and detailing it, I just can't remember who the company was.

R_Peters Mar 4th, 03, 9:07 AM I've sent mime to American Classic Restorations (Uxbridge, MA), but dont have it back yet. The price is dependent upon how much (if any) repair needs to be accomplished. Mine needed three small repairs (lucky none on the face). When you add up the rechroming, refinishing of the bezel & lower a/c vents, replating of the ashtray, etc the cost is around $1000.00.
Their phone number is 508-278-0020.

RC 70 Mar 4th, 03, 10:32 AM Try www.americanplasticchrome.com (http://www.americanplasticchrome.com) cost was $650
mike69ss Mar 4th, 03, 1:14 PM I used american plastic chrome -- they did a great job. I've used American Classic Restorations for other parts and I'm sure they would also do 1st quality work. Will not be as cheap as repro but will fit much better.

Most alternatives are pricey.

Jagarang Mar 5th, 03, 3:25 PM I'm happy with the stock look. The car is a nice clean rust free driver. I'm in the process of getting the little things tidied up so it will be a more complete package. You can see it here if your interested:

I haven't had the car long and will be doing alot of suspension upgrades, installing some sort of anti-theft system, putting the factory A/C back in, and so on. Currently the idiot light gauge cluster is in bad shape what with the odometer not working, which drives me nuts, and what appear to be "adjustment" holes drilled in the gauge lens...UUuufff. The moron scratched the odometer numbers to shreds when he adjusted it! It seems he also wanted to adjust the clock in the same fashion so he figured two holes in the lens had to be better than just one! Anyway I've been looking high and low for a nice set of factory gauges to install and havn't had any luck. I also need to finish the console and floor shift conversion/installation.
New68SS Mar 5th, 03, 4:57 PM Nice car!
What color of blue is that? Looks really good.
Dwayne
Jagarang Mar 6th, 03, 3:27 PM Stock Astro Blue.... I'm not sure if a "Tourquoise" is supposed to come after it. Hmmmm...of course when I go to the paint code section here @TC I dont see Astro Blue Tourqoise listed! I'll take a look at the build sheet when I get home for the paint code! AHHhhhhhhhh....5 minutes searching for a Decode I posted last year gives me
Medium Blue Metallic 25
and special THANKS TO
Steve S
Tech Team
who decoded the cowl tag for me before I purchased the car.
I didn't think I'd like the color as much as I do. It's grown on me tremendously and I love it now. I still like Silver with black stripe combo as well.
PRO STREET GARY...I contacted JustDashes and they don't offer a complete dash restoration, just the dash pad. And the quote was between 400-500 for just the pad. I'm looking into everybodies suggestion now!! Thanks for the help and keep the list coming!
R_Peters Mar 6th, 03, 5:33 PM Steve,
I spoke with American Classics & my dash bezel is supposed to be coming back to me in the next 2 weeks or so. It's completed except for the nickel plating of the ashtray insert. If you're not in a big hurry, I'll let you know how it looks when I finally get it (can even take some pictures for you).

What year is your Elke? We just bought a '70 SS Chevelle Dash to make the pattern for the Aluminum Bezel, and it doesn't look anything like your dash at all.
Was there that big a difference in a standard dash versus SS or what?
Any info greatly appreciated.

FUBAR Mar 7th, 03, 2:36 AM I believe that the difference comes from the fact that his is a 75, and you have the dash for a 70.
I have a 71 non-ss and it looks nothing like it at all. So the difference isnt from the fact that ones an ss and one isn't.
I think that 70-72 shared the same dash designs for both the ss and non-ss. But I may be wrong. I just know that their parts are very inter-changable.
So it's probably just a difference of years.
robert defalco Mar 7th, 03, 10:08 AM the 70 ss and non ss are similar that year they came with a sweep speedometer or round all gauge packages were of the roud variety
just dashes did a great job on that dash by the way but i believe they are known for there foam/neoprene products not for plastic dash restoration when you choose a place make sure they do plastic rechroming that is a very importnt part when i sent my dash to Mr G's for that and for there ability to repair small holes that were drilled in the dash and again it came out awesome
Pro Street Garry Mar 7th, 03, 10:25 AM Ya it looks differnet because the year differance.
I'd rather have the 70!
I did send out all the plasic chome out to Mr G's they also do great work as well! graemlins/beers.gif

So it's probably just a difference of years. We must tell you we really worried, as Team Members on this site have been after us for months to build the '70-'72 Aluminum Dash Bezels, especially after our success with the '68-'69 Custom Aluminum Dash Bezels, then we see his picture and ouch!
We finally were able to purchase a '70 complete dash, and a '65 Dash Bezel to make our patterns at a very low price from a Chevelle/El Camino enthusiast. It will take a few weeks before we have the final version available (Patent Pending of course).
Sure glad it was a '75, we were beginning to wonder if ?????
