How would you install a factory "rolling tach" for a 68 chevelle ss 4 speed. I currently have a black plastic dash with no hole. Do I have to take dash completely off? Will there be a "plexy-glass" cover under dash? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Dave

Yes, you will need to remove the dash. Then remove the cluster from the bezel. The factory tach mounts between the speedo pod and the gauge pod. The clear plastic lens will not be there, You will need to find one. That is probably easier said than done. Cutting the hole in the bezel is the easy part. The GM assembly manual for a 68 Chevelle gives the exact specs for the opening, but essentially, the hole is cut 1/8 inch to the inside of the raised chrome edge in the center section of the gauge bezel. Corners should be rounded with a radius of approximately 1/4 inch. The really tough part will be finding the tach bezel that trims this hole. They can be difficult to find and expensive to procure. Now you need to modify your existing under dash harness to provide connectivity and illumination to the tach.
It can be done... but you may be better off to find a complete tach dash and just swap it as a whole unit. Good luck either way.

I have the tach bezel for my dash, but what I am wondering, is there suppose to be plexi glass in front of the tach? I thought it was open down to the tach. But that wouldn't make much sense. It would be dusty all the time. Where does the plexi-glass go. Is it held in by the dash bezel? Is it glued to the dash after the opening is cut out? Bill
There is a guy in the 68 parts section with some 68 dash parts and tach bezels. This is the link. >> http://www.chevelles.com/ads/parts/messages/16799.html

Bill,
The plastic lens that covers the tach is actually attached to the gauge cluster. I do not believe that it is as easily removed as the lenses that cover the speedo and clock. However, if you are able to locate all of the components, I'm certain that a non tach gauge cluster can be modified to accept the tach and its respective lens. The tach is attached to the cluster from the rear. Hope this is of some help.
