Not sure on a '72 but mine has a 'button' on the side of the HL switch. You push it in and pull the knob and shaft out as a unit.

Shai,
First disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. Next get a flashlight and look up under the dash in the location of the headlight switch. Feel around the switch and you should find a small button with spring between it and the switch bracket. Pull the headlight knob out, on the dash, like you were turning on the headlights, press the button on the back of the switch and the headlight knob and shaft should come out of the switch. When you reinstall just push the knob back into the switch.

Ed is correct, however, it is MUCH easier to do this by simply removing the top dash pad. Remove the screws that secure it (look carefully at the top lip of the instrument panel where the dash pad meets) and remove the screws--there are also some that are only visible when you open the glove box door). Then carefully slide the pad outwards and upwards to disengage the clips that hold it to the firewall mounting tabs. Careful the clips like to fly off and get lost http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

Removing the pad is also much easier with the "A pillars" removed. You know those things that cover the posts that hold the roof up on either side of the windshield. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
