The 65 SS I just purchased has custom seat covers and door panels, etc with an aftermarket steering wheel. I would like some pics of factory stock interiors for reference. thanks. Also can someone tell me if you could get the 4 speed cars without a console? thanks

I have plenty of pictures of the interior which is bone stock on my web site. You can get there by clicking the link in my signature line. Check the "Final Results" page for the best pictures of the interior.

The console was part of the SS package if you also got a 4-speed or a Powerglide automatic. If you bought a Malibu SS with a 3-speed manual you did not get a console. In the Malibu, 300 Deluxe and 300 you could order a 4-speed which would get you a floor shifter without a console. It may have been possible to request a console delete on an SS with a 4-speed but I've never seen such a car nor ever heard of such a car.

The El Camino was a little different. You could order buckets and a console with 4-speed or Powerglide but they were optional and certainly not tied to an SS package as there was no SS package for the El Camino in those years. 4-speeds typically would have had a floor shift without a console in the El Camino.

For clarity, the comments above only apply to the 1964 and 1965 Chevelles.

thanks Rich, Im still trying to figure this car out. It has the clutch pedal and a big hole in the floor (covered with a piece of sheetmetal like it was a manual car, but had a power glide console laying in the back seat, with a bunch of other parts. so either it was a auto car converted to stick or a stick converted to auto??? steering column was swapped to a column shift auto. so it a mis-match of parts. It once was a race car so Im thinking someone went from stick to auto.

It sounds to me like it possibly wasn't even an SS car in the beginning. What is the model number of the car? Luckily the early cars can be proven to be an original SS car by the model number.

The model number can be found on the cowl tag or is the first 5 digits of the VIN (not including the leading letter character).

Its an SS, thats the first thing I checked. 3837 v8 malibu ss, sport coupe. I checked the vin against the cowl just to make nothing fishy had taken place.
