: 1971 or 72 chevelle convertible - what is it?
Lane Blackwell Sep 9th, 99, 8:20 PM I purchased a 71 or 72 chevelle convertible as a parts car w/ no title. the guy said it was a heavy chevy. I can tell under the ugly purple paint and rust that it was gold. VIN # 1D67J2K613070, factory 350 4bl., 12 bolt rearend, white buckets w/ console. Body plate ST 72 13667 K 6B2243 / 06B 03852 53
Can someone let me know what this car is and is it worth restoring.
gUmBaLL68Malibu Sep 9th, 99, 8:59 PM without a title it is considered stolen pretty much so its probably not worth mentioning and/or restoring
JWagner Sep 9th, 99, 10:32 PM I agree, do not spend any $$$$$$ on this unless you have a good title. Or you can put an ad in the paper to sell the parts from it.
It is worth only what you can get for the parts.
I disagree,
If it is a convertible, and not too bad a rust bucket, then it's well worth restoring.
Chances are , the car probably never had a title. In some states, back in the 70's and 80's you didnt have to have a title. Now here in MA. everything now has to have a title. I have both a 72 Chevelle, and a 72 Monte carlo, both never had titles. The Monte has been my family since new. As long as I own them I do not need to have a title. But if I sell them, the new owner has to apply for a title. from then on the car will always have a title.
Check with your Registry of motor vehicles, if your car was supposed to have been titled when it was new, then they can do a title search. Just give them your VIN.they will be able to tell if it ever had one or not.
According to your vin, it is a 72 with a 350 4bbl.
I have the same exact car, but it's an SS and not a convertible. The only way that I know to tell if it is a Heavy Chevy, is to find the build sheet, and also if it has a rubber floormat . All heavy Chevy's came with rubber floormat's and no carpet.
Good luck.

DZAUTO Sep 10th, 99, 4:54 AM Lane,
To answer the other half of your question, which no one has done yet, the 2 in the VIN indicates it is a 72.

Steve S Sep 10th, 99, 8:19 AM J in the VIN indicates it originaly came with a 350cid, 175hp, 4bbl engine. If this is a Heavy Chevy (domed hood, special interior panels, Heavy Chevy stripes) you would have a rare one. You see very few Heavy Chevy's, let alone a convertible.

Bill T SS70 Sep 10th, 99, 9:49 AM I think the 53 on your trim tag translates to the color: Cortez Gold Met. Seems to fit what you have found.
I also agree with JSL. If the Vin Tag is inplace and the Trim Tag matches you should be able to get a title for it as along as you have a receipt for the purchase. A run of the vin # would turn up if it was/is stolen. Check with you state DMV. Every state is different. It blows my mind reading some of the posts here about the hassles some people have with their state burracrates.
Makes our NH state moto, "Live Free or Die" mean more everyday. By the way, that motto is on our License Plates also.

dcarr Sep 10th, 99, 4:47 PM The only convertible for '72 was a "Malibu" model. The Heavy Chevy was based on the base model Chevelle. There can't be a Heavy Chevy convertible.
