I'm about to install my weatherstripping in the chevelle. Should I apply a light skim of adhesive to the backs of them? Also the metal housing of the roof rail, should I replace the the adhesive strip behind it? I don't want any leaks so any advice would be great!!
Thanks
John

1. With the weatherstripping on the doors, I didn't bother with adhesive. It has numerous plastic clips and screws in the ends to hold it in place.

2. I would replace the seal on the roofrail metal housing. Bottom line is, it's old. Do it while it's convenient to do so.

3. You should use weatherstripping adhesive for the trunk and for the roofrail stripping.

Another tip when trying to push the weatherstripping into place, particularly in the roofrail and trunk, use a popsicle stick to push on it so as not to tear or gouge it ( or your paint ). And most importantly, be patient. Turn on the tunes, grab a cold drink and have at it.

Just another .02. For the doors, in my experience, just using the clips, the weather stripping will form small arches along the edges, between the clips if that is all that is used.

For the roof rail if your do not disturb the metal rail, the seal behind will probably be OK. I did not use any adhesive in this area and the original I removed was not glued either. For the trunk I only glued it together at the joint at the latch location. The popsicle stick is a good idea, but mine pushed in easily with my fingers.

Not a hard job to do.
Have fun.

I removed the roof rail weatherstripping channels, to soda blast the car. There seemed to be a substaintial amount of sealer underneath the rails and it was pretty dried out so I plan on replacing it, with what I don't know? Does anyone know what they used for applying the roof rail. I have also heard that you probably dont want remove these unless you have to. Of course I heard this after mine had been in a box for 6 months.

Up in this part of the country the local home centres sell a type of house window weatherstripping that consists of a strip if 6 or 8 small strips of a moldable sealer. Price, a couple of dollars. I used this as it doen't harden for years and can be molded to the length and thickness desired. Molded into a thin strip that would not warp the metal retention strip and inserted on the outside of the screws, pressing retaining strip firmly by hand to compress evenly. That was four years ago and still working like original.

Just another idea.

On the weather stripping I used It came from NPD the instructions stated to use adhesive between the plastic tits. I got a tube of adhesive just for this and emblems at my local auto parts. Worked great. Really simple to install.
