Riffers70

I've got a non-functional, need to verify that before I proceed, '71/'72 sweep dash square clock. Bought it for the '70, and have since found an NOS '70 clock with wires/knob. So, this one goes. I want to take it apart and see if I can get it running again, before I sell it. I know there are rebuild services, but I don't want to put out money that I most likely won't get back.
Any ideas? Has anyone else made an attempt at this? TIA!

I've started a lot of clock posts... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
First of all, All 1970-1972 sweep dash clocks are the same EXCEPT 1970 units have GREEN numbering and hash marks, unlike the WHITE on the 1971-1972's.
I've taken apart a couple clocks and successfully done my own rebuild. I am actually going to post a "how-to" on my webpage, but...for one I'm swamped trying to get the radio info pages done for this site, and the original pictures I took didn't come out, so I have to retake the pictures and redo the process.
They are not hard at all, you just need very fine tools, a lot of patience, and a general understandings of the workings.
You'll probably discover that the rewind coils have burned, there is usually a linking wire that can be resoldered to reactivate these. However, that's just half the battle. I always take all the gearing out and LUBRICATE it, that's the biggest problem with the vintage clocks, not enough lube! How can the mainspring run when the axles are frozen in time?! Also there are 2 contacts heavily covered in carbon that will have to be cleaned and gently filed. This is what makes the circuit, causing the rewind coils to be feed 12 volts and it KICKS the combination contact ratchet/mainspring back to rewind to keep the clock going. It rewinds itself within 40 secs. to 2 minutes depending on the mainspring condition.
If you could just wait, hopefully I'll get that how-to done http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif
