the assembly manual is very vague on the location of the holes for the 66 tach. Can someone nail down the centers of the holes with reference to the ashtray opening or something?

Hello, there is a exsisting hole from the factory already drilled, on the left of the ash tray. Hope this helps.

Not if the car didn't come with a Knee-Knocker Tach., it was an option not standard issue.

Mystery, My 66 Malibu did not come with a Tach, but the hole is pre drilled from the factory. When you look underside of the dash it is a hole with a square around it, if that makes any sense. Check the assembly manual. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

It sounds like you two (MSaxton and tdjr66)are looking at the wrong location... Sounds to me like you are thinking of the bottom strip of the dash (hidden from normal view)

The 1966 Knee-knocker, factory installed tach, mounts on the front panel, to the right of the column, roughly centered between the steering column and ashtray (I think its a little closer to the ashtray), and vertically its roughly equal distant between the guage panel and bottom of the dash... The metal portion of the dash at the correct location is only one layer thick, so there could be no predrilled holes without them showing up... A bare hole would look strange... The dashes are two layers along the bottom portion, but this is not where the tach goes...
