View Full Version : Seat foam quality?

I've talked with a couple of upholstery shops in the area regarding the seat foam for my bench seat.
There seems to be mixed feelings on whether to buy pre formed seat foam or have the upholstery shop cut-to-fit the foam?
I've been told that the quality of the pre formed cushions vary greatly in density which results in a seat that is either to hard or to soft. Kind of reminds me of the three little bears http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif
Any suggestions or experiences?

If you are doing the recovering yourself, it would be much better to buy the pre molded foam. That way your are sure of the fit.
If a shop is doing it cut to fit foam works just fine, especially for a bench seat.
Density too soft will not give the individual the comfort they need, and over time the covers will become saggy. It also depends on what shape your springs are in.
Personally, I would recommend a fairly firm foam that will give you the support to cruise for miles. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Oh, and one other thing to think about is how much head room do you have? The firmer foam will sit you higher in the seat.

At 5'10" and 200lbs I don't think head room will be a problem but the firmness on the seat cushions are http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif I've had the car for 18 years, so long term quality is very important to me.

Cardiac, Bench seats in '67 (I'm going by whats printed in your signature) used cut foam, not molded. Ask the shop to lay samples of the thickness they will be using on your seat for you to try. Try a different foam each time. My experience has been that an 1845 1" foam should give you good comfort while holding up well over time.
