: What's the advantage of dump tubes?

I've seen a number of cars in the mags, and heard of a few here where dumps are used instead of standard tailpipes.

Is this any practical advantage to this, or is it simply because it looks cool?

Thanks, Kurt

Here in Los Angeles, the major advantage would be the speed with which you could get a noise ticket.

Kurt-
I put on 45 degree exhaust dump tubes because when I got my flowmasters I didn't have the money for the full system as I just bought my 64 so I had gotten Summit straight exhaust pipes. A couple months later I had black crap all over my rearend and bottom of my bumper so I put on the dumps to keep it clean back there. I figure that way if the black crap is coming out my pipes it will hit the asphalt and not the bottom of my car. So far so good and the dumps went on in September, my 64 is my daily driver.
My 2 cents, Steve

There is no advantage unless you like dusting your car off every time you start it...FRED

Byfield,

Major advantage: cheap.

Major disadvantages: noise at all speeds, vibration, buzzing, dust clouds to irritate the people you drive near in parking lots, setting off everybody's car alarms, all that...

The reason I dumped mine just below the rear axle is because the extra bends (4) that are required to route the exhaust over the axle cause a restriction. This restriction robs horsepower. Horsepower takes precedence in my case because I only drive it and race it when I feel like it. If it were a daily driver the downtubes would cause long term hearing loss and a soot covered driveway.

Hey Kurt you really want to hear that engine I have a set of header mufflers{now that is a joke] who ever called them mufflers I don't know cause these things exhaust right under the seat.I used them to make it to the muffler shop to have the proper system installed.Still have them IF anyone is interested...FRED
