I am considering installing a set of speakers in the sail panel area of my elky. Has anyone done this or investigated it? Is there enough room (depth) for a 2 1/2" deep spkr? I will be able to pull my panel to see whats under there next weekend, but in the mean time, I'm wondering if anyone knows if this may work. Thx.

i didn't measure exactly but i had my sail panels out a while ago. i don't think it was deep enough though. my best thoughts on speaker locations are under the rear shelf (i made some boxes) or in the doors. i've never seen them in the doors but i don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. or you could get the kickpanel speakers in opg.
however that said i just realized that if there is room that the sail panels would be an excelent place for tweeters even if they were top mounted.

I just measured the depth on my 68 parts car. It is 2" at its deepest, most areas are closer to 1 1/2". ElkyD68 is right about it being a good place for tweeters, but not much else will fit. Good luck.

If anyone really wants speakers in their doors let me know. I have a set of black 68 panels that were already cut for 6x9's towards the front. The drivers side is messed up on top though. I just can't stand the thought of another good origional panel getting hacked up.

Another 2-bits worth...
I don't think you'd get much more than mids to highs from that location which is too close to your ears. You also wouldn't get very good separation.
I would also put a speaker with good bass reflex under the shelf. I saw an awesome enclosure that looked like it was integrated as part of the rear shelf. It was built so tastefully, it looked stock. You can put some round speakers in the dash in place of the 4x6 stocks (sorry, assumed stereo dash) AND, the coup de grậce, put some tweeters on the pillars. You'll have a thumping system that won't require a great deal of power.

Thanx all. I have a set of 6X9's (2-way) mounted on a panel hanging from the rear shelf. I just put a 4" 2-way in the dash locations (the 5 1/4 would not fit). The extra set is a 5 1/4 component set. I was planning to put the tweeter at the top of the A-pillar and am trying to figure out what to do with the 5 1/4 mid. All are Infinity spkrs.
My kick panels are not an option, I have relays for power accesories on both sides. The front of the door is out because I have aftermarket power window motors located there.
I found a spacer at an audio store today that would go between the spkr & mount surface to raise it out. Alan you said, that the sail panel location would probably not work too well? Its too close. Maybe I should just forget the Mid.
Can I connect the 6X9 and the tweeter to my crossover and just not use the 5 1/4 mid ?? Thanx for the suggestions.

Rick,
Funny you mention Infinity. I put the Kappa Series in my convertible. I put the 6x9's in the back (can you say tight?) and have the components for the front. I put the tweeters on the A pillar (which is the best part of the system - it really clears the sound up) and the rounds in the dash. I'm almost sure that they were 5 1/4. I'll go look for the docs. At any rate, I made my own brackets that worked out pretty well.
The system does bump.
It was just my opinion about the mid's to highs being too close to your ears. There's one way to find out. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
