: Carpet different for 4 speed/console car? 69
Flye Mar 21st, 04, 2:19 PM Ordered Auto Custom Carpet for '69, 4 speed. Started putting it in today, but seems to be molded for a non console 4 speed hump (square mold, flat top), so the console doesn't fit at all over the big hump.
I checked their website again, and they don't show a difference for console/non console. Would the 4 speeed CONSOLE car use the same carpet as an automatic since the tunnel hump is much smaller and rounded for the console cars?
Any help? (Don't want to make same mistake again as I've just wasted the front carpet trying to split it, beat on it, etc., trying to make it contract enough to be usable. (Thank goodness I ordered the expensive stuff that everyone recommended, as I'd have hated to see the fit on the cheap ones.....)
Bill Rose Mar 21st, 04, 6:05 PM The fit is lousy at best. You're correct, the carpet is molded for a non console car, and they only make one. I put their carpet in my 71(console car) a couple years ago and more recently on my 68 console car. Both were poor fitting around the shifter. I cut a V shape in it to remove the excess and was able to make it look good cause the console covers the area.
They also have wrinkles in the carpet which are impossible to get out. It looks like they take it off a hot mold and stuff it into a box which is way to small. Until we stop buying this crap they will continue to make inferior products. These are suppose to be the good carpets. But like you said, you have to wonder what the bad ones look like...
Flye Mar 21st, 04, 7:19 PM Maybe everyone that was raving about the fit of ACC has a non console car???? I also got the same box that you did evidently as it is lumpy as can be and I gave it time to "release"..... I've also cut a ton out of center, and am on verge of having cut too much and showing at edges of console. I hate whining about this stuff, but I paid almost twice as much by going thru their website (?) and still got something that doesn't look right and doesn't fit.
Has anyone gotten a decent fitting carpet for a console tunnel hump (4 speed)?
Has anyone tried the "regular" carpet in a 4 speed car? I can't see where it'd fit any worse than the non console moulded "4 speed" carpet that I've got at this point.
69SSRat Mar 21st, 04, 7:44 PM Try yearone they carry 4sp molded carpet
Flye Mar 21st, 04, 7:52 PM Thanks for the response, but I need to be clear on my issue.
I got the "4 speed molded" carpet from ACC, BUT the mold is for a non console tunnel hump, which is large, square and flat, and the console doesn't fit around it.
I'm looking for a correct fit for a 4 speed, console tunnel hump. I'm also asking has anyone used the regular carpet on the 4 speed console?
Thanks again.
Flye Mar 22nd, 04, 8:14 PM OK, here is my latest brain wave. If the console plastic for the 4 speed and automatic are the same, in theory the carpet should be the same, so I've just dropped another order for an auto, with the assumption that the carpet will be closer for the console tunnel hump, than for the 4 speed non console car.
As a side note, and without further comment, I called ACC factory today. Had a very pleasant conversation with the technical support rep. Interestingly, this particular person told me that there was no way a '69 Chevelle 4 speed EVER came with a console as they only came with NO consoles. Oh well, guess that explains why you get a non console molding if you tell them you've got a 4 speed.
ss3964spd Mar 23rd, 04, 2:47 PM I feel your pain, Son.
I replaced the carpet in my 66 4-speed Impala with ACC carpet, and paid MORE for the privledge of ordering it direct from them.
"Molded" seems to be more of a suggestion than actual manufacturing process. After removing all the interior bits necessary for the job, I spent HOURS with a heat gun and various heavy objects to get the carpet to fit correctly and lay flat.
I just don't understand how any manufacturer sleeps at night turning out a product like that.

1970SS396&1967 Mar 23rd, 04, 4:40 PM Ive used ACC for several projects and it is junk! When I put it in my custom 84 chev pickup and then tried to vaccum it and it would roll up into a ball and turn to fuzz.Sometimes it all you can find so your stuck! I hate payin for junk!!
Flye Mar 23rd, 04, 7:01 PM As an aside, I did verify that the product that is purchased thru their website, is the same product that many of the aftermarket suppliers carry (that carry ACC), and I verified that they charge approx. $175.00 for the '69 Chevelle piece that most of the vendors carry for $90-110.
And yes, my first order was thru their website before I learned this little tidbit.
ADDENDUM: I found thru purchasing both, that IF YOU HAVE A CONSOLE CAR, and even if you have a 4 speed, you should order the "automatic" carpet if you're getting the ACC piece. The 4 speed they make is for the NON CONSOLE tunnel. The Automatic carpet fit over the 4 speed, CONSOLE tunnel OK. The mold for the non console 4 speed doesn't fit at all due to bulky hard molded lump. FYI.
