HI guys. I have a 69 Chevelle SS. has an ac dash panel, with astro vents, but no ac unit or controls. My question is on the front kick panels. There are two pull levers for fresh air vents and for astro vents. Were astro only used for ac cars? Or did non ac cars have them also? Which do I need to get to replace them?
I need two black panels in good with two pull knobs.
Thanks guys........Ron

Ron It sounds like you have a non AC car and are confusing Astro ventilation with Air conditioning. On an AC dash bezel you will have two AC outlets just above the heater control panel. I do not have any personal experience with the AC cars as mine is a non AC (`69) I do believe that the kick panel on an AC car will have either one or no pull cables depending on whether or not you could get AC and astro together, but it shouldn't have a floor vent. On my `69 non AC the kick panel has two knobs, the top is for astro and the bottom is for the floor vent. there are no additional vents in the dash bezel above the heater controls.
I also searched for new kick panels with both knobs and could not find any, what I did find was a cherry `69 LeMans being parted out and the kick panels were a perfect match! In my area (Puget Sound WA) you cant even find a Chevelle parts car so I have been looking at all GM A body cars and have found a lot of similar parts. Check it out.

Mine has factory air and the kick panels have ONE knob each. They control a flapper behind the round A/C vents on each side. The center vent has a lever on it to close it off.

What you are saying is, that the astro vents are not related to the ac unit. Both pull knobes are for fresh air, on non ac cars. Astro was an option for another fresh air supply outlet.
The opening in the panel above the heater controls, would be for the vents for the ac air.
Dave, does your car have astro vents in the normal position, and are they used for ac and fresh air supply? Sence you only have 1 pull knob. With kick panel knob in the closed position, would be for ac, if it were on. In the pulled position would be for fresh air. MY guess is that, in place of astro. You have slotted normal ac vents. If so, are they in the same position as the astro vents would be?
Dave, do you have any type of grills on your kick panels? With the kick panel removed. Are there any difference in the holes in the metal work for, ac, fresh air, speakers ect.
......Thanks ....RON

No holes or grilles in kick panels. The slide knob cable goes to a butterfly behind the round A/C vent on each side/bottom of the dash. The only way "fresh air" would come out of these vents would be via the air conditioner ducts with the controls on "Vent". This would bring air from behind the hood, on the cowl, then through all the boxes, etc. and out the vent openings.

Thanks Dave. That clears that up. Do you know where the astro vents get it's air supply from?

Astro Air has two access points to the cowl area. One low and one high.
